At that time, some soldiers were forbidden to marry, and St. Valentine would go against the law and perform weddings for these soldiers anyway. For this and other 'crimes', he was imprisoned and later executed. An added embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell.
