Those Decadent Thanksgiving Tables…by ProGiftNet.com

November is well underway, and for us at ProGiftNet.com, the holiday spirit is definitely in the air! Even on an unusual year such as this, we are all getting ready for that Thursday that will kick off the season, and one thing is for sure...Thanksgiving is all about family and friends, but it is also about the table that we will sit around and the experiences we will share with our loved ones!

By now we are all familiar with the comfort food that is shared on this day, those freshly harvested ingredients, and the fall flavors in all of their splendor! But only second to that, is how we dress that table to convey the feeling of the season. Centerpieces, arrangements, table toppers and tablecloths bring all of the magic together on this evening, and we are here to tell you all about your options! Plus, a little history behind then...

The Origins of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving was originally held as a way to celebrate a fruitful autumn harvest in preparation for the winter, and to thank the ancient gods for that. It didn't start in North America, where it is customary to celebrate in the present day. The original versions of these celebrations have their birth in many classic cultures, such as the Romans, Greeks and even Egyptians.  Those celebrations would consist of several days of feasts and gifts, and the adoration of their gods and goddesses, like the Roman goddess Demeter: Goddess of grain and harvest.

The American version, however, the one we are familiar with, started in 1621, and it is steeped in a lot of folklore and legend. Edward Winslow, an American Pilgrim leader who served as governor of Plymouth Colony, describes in a letter a prosperous harvest year of corn, barley, and peas.  He goes on to describe men sent to gather fowl, so they might "rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors". And then "at which time, amongst other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us...with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted..."

So with these little history nuggets we just shared, two things are for sure: This is the season to come together, and to feast!

A Table to Gather Around

The primal concept of the Thanksgiving tables is, and always has been, abundance. It is customary to find a version of a Cornucopia as a centerpiece! The cornucopia, also called the horn of plenty, is a symbol of abundance and nourishment, commonly a large horn-shaped container overflowing with fruits, flowers, or nuts

Modern versions of this can be fashioned easily! Choosing a lovely fruit basket for example, or displaying fall produce such as apples, corn, walnuts and pumpkins in bowls or panniers, or adorning glass translucent vases with foliage and grains!

Fruit baskets are a staple on ProGiftNet.com, and so are flowers! A popular option to bring beauty, color and a homey feeling to our tables as well!  Arranged with fruits, or on their own, fall flowers such as chrysanthemums and sunflowers really convey the spirit of the holiday, and the yellow, burnt oranges and reds tie the entire concept together. In the spirit of the season you can also incorporate wheat and oats stems to your flower arrangements, or even twigs and berries!

Another element that can be incorporated easily and with stunning results is candles! Careful with scented candles however! Remember you are going to be tasting yummy dishes all evening, and a strong scent can definitely put an undesired spin on your meal. But the warmth of a small flame is more than desirable.

Winter foliage, like pine branches, although more of a “Christmas” feeling, can decorate beautifully! So can pinecones. So, if you happen to have a forest close-by (or a flower market for that matter), this can be the year in which you give them a try!

Dressing the table. We’ve covered the options for centerpieces by now… how about the rest of the elements? Silverware and china… wineglasses and napkins, what about those?

Well, the holidays are that time of the year when we bring out the special serving dishes or plates, the “fancy china”, and all of those things destined to be showcased on special days. Some tips to keep it classy and in tune with the spirit of the occasion:

  • It's all about fall! The color palette you should keep in mind, is the one of a forest in autumn! Yellows, oranges, auburns and warm browns. Hints of red here and there are also lovely!
  • Rustic is fantastic. Burlap tablecloths or placemats can be a great choice, especially over a wooden table. Wicker elements can be incorporated. Some other ideas are to use vintage handkerchiefs tied with string as napkins, and mixing and matching vintage plates.
  • Mason jars! A new classic for beverages and desserts.

Alongside the turkey, the stuffing, the pies and yams, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, these ideas are going to make your table look picture perfect and fantastic!

Happy Thanksgiving! ...Give Thanks - Part II from ProGiftNet.com

First of all, from everyone here at ProGiftNet.com, Happy Thanksgiving! We think it is very important to give thanks, since we feel very blessed every day to be part of your lives. Because of what we do, we are a part of people's daily lives, and we feel very honored and thankful. We are there in good times and in bad, from birthday celebrations and holidays, to the more serious and humbling occasions in life, which make us always take a moment and reflect. We thank you for the trust you place in us throughout all of these occasions.

As we had mentioned in our previous post, to commemorate the holiday, we will be taking a small tour of the United States this Thanksgiving. To start us off, we have New York. New York is a "fast-paced, globally influential center of art, culture, fashion and finance."1   One of the most notable Thanksgiving traditions takes places in the beautiful city of New York, and that is the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, going on right now. Need to send flowers to friends and family in New York? How about sending them the beautiful Autumn Splendor Thanksgiving Bouquet. The Autumn Splendor Thanksgiving Bouquet, from ProGiftNet.com, is the perfect way to give thanks this holiday season. Next up is another beautiful metropolis - Chicago. The city of Chicago is located "on Lake Michigan in Illinois, is among the largest cities in the U.S. Famed for its bold architecture... The city is also renowned for its museums, including the Art Institute and its expansive collections".2 Chicago is home to it's own parade - the McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade. Another Thanksgiving Day activity is the turkey trot, which is held in many different cities throughout the United States. This marathon is a way to start the day off right before the big feast. Need to send flowers to Chicago? We've got you covered. How about sending your friends and loved ones the Berry Fall Flower Basket? The Berry Fall Flower Basket, from ProGiftNet.com, gets its same from the beautiful berry-hued flowers it contains. The beautiful pink roses, carnations and Peruvian lilies are beautifully offset by the dark burgundy tones of the lilies. A stunning flower basket perfect for not only Thanksgiving, but also any occasion.

Last, but not least, the magnificent city of Dallas, a "modern metropolis in north Texas" the city "is a commercial and cultural hub of the region."3 Also home to a Turkey Trot, however, this one is one of the biggest in the country. However, the thing to do for those in Dallas this Thanksgiving is football. All loyal fans will be watching the Cowboys play the Carolina Panthers. Need to send flowers to Dallas? We can help. How about sending the beautiful Changing Autumn Leaves Bouquet? The Changing Autumn Leaves Bouquet, from ProGiftNet.com, was created to be reminiscent of exactly what its name describes - the beautiful colors the season brings as the leaves change...we see the colors all around on the trees and on the ground as the leaves begin to fall. This classic arrangement combines yellowish orange roses, orange tea roses, and burgundy lilies, all set against green foliage. The perfect way to let someone know you are thinking of them this Thanksgiving season.

Give Thanks...Thanksgiving from ProGiftNet.com Part I

Somehow it's that time of year again - the holiday rush has definitely begun. We're only a few weeks away from the end of the year, but before that, we have a lot to do. Coming up first on the list is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving this year falls on November 26, 2015, which means it is rapidly approaching. As all of us scramble to get everything done before then, we should all take a moment to really consider what the holiday means. For this reason, we wanted to start Part I of this Thanksgiving blog with a little tribute to something we are thankful for here at ProGiftNet.com - the wonderful city of Miami, which is our home.

In the past several months, we have discussed many beautiful and diverse countries around the world. Today, however, we would like to stick to this wondrous city, which is close to our hearts. Although not a large city by any means of the imagination, Miami definitely holds its fair share of diverse cultures and ethnicities. People come to Miami from all over the world, either to live in, or on vacation. They come to enjoy the stunning beaches, the great weather (even with all that rain!), and the fun nightlife. There is definitely always something to do in Miami.

Autumn Sun Bouquet
Whether you need to send flowers to Miami, or to anywhere in the state of Florida, all of us at ProGiftNet.com will be happy to help. Need some suggestions? How about the Autumn Sun Bouquet. The Autumn Sun Bouquet, from ProGiftNet.com, is reminiscent of a walk in the woods on a beautiful and crisp fall day, walking in the sun while observing the beautiful colors on the trees as the leaves change colors. The arrangement contains stunning yellow lilies, bright orange gerberas, soft orange roses, and burgundy mini carnations, all set against lush green foliage. This exquisite arrangement is perfect for any occasion, and especially fitting for Thanksgiving.

Miami to us has always been an interesting juxtaposition of lifestyles. The famous quote of "we live where you vacation" definitely rings true here. As we go about our daily lives though, we do notice things in our day to day which call our attention. Recently while on the metro here in Miami, there was a gentleman sketching passengers as a way of passing the time and practicing his hobby. We couldn't help but observe him, as he looked at his unknowing subject, quickly sketching away. And then, just like that, his stop came, and he went on his way. This reminded us so much of being in a large city like New York or Chicago, where we have seen similar events.

As Miami continues to grow, we see a fantastic influence from bigger cities reaching us. A great example of this has been the growth of Wynwood and the monthly Art Walk, where galleries open their doors free of charge for guests to wander to view all different kinds of art. It is definitely a great experience. As someone who dedicates time to beautiful items, which flowers are, we can definitely appreciate art in all of its forms.

Autumn Harvest Bouquet
For us, flowers and arrangements are our art. For this reason, we think the Autumn Harvest Bouquet is another great Thanksgiving option. Send this beautiful arrangement to a friend or loved one this Thanksgiving holiday. The Autumn Harvest Bouquet brings together a striking combination of all the best colors that Fall has to offer. The arrangement contains stunning burgundy chrysanthemums set against the softer tones of the soft orange roses and yellow mini carnations, which also contain hints of orange, as well as lush green foliage. Here at ProGiftNet.com we think the arrangement is sure to delight all who receive it!

As we mentioned before, although today we wanted to give thanks to the city of Miami, here at ProGiftNet.com we can help you send flowers throughout Florida. Whether you need to send flowers to Ft. Lauderdale, Sarasota, Jacksonville, or anywhere in between, we are here to help make gift giving a little easier this holiday season. Have a friend in Tampa whom you would like to say 'thank you' to next week? Check out all of our Thanksgiving options online.

Another one of our favorites is the Rustic Charm Bouquet.  The Rustic Charm Bouquet brings together beautiful orange spray roses, light yellow carnations, and the most charming daisies. All put together with lush greens in a glass vase, it is sure to bring cheer and good-wishes to everyone!

We hope you've enjoyed a mini-tribute to Miami. We are truly thankful for all the city gives to us each and every day. Don't forget to come back for Part II of our Thanksgiving series as we continue our tour, but this time, of US cities, as we prepare for Thanksgiving 2015.
